Over 200 National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders from Rukungiri district have today Tuesday 21st February 2023 endorsed President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa to run as the sole candidate for 2026 general elections.
They jointly appreciated President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his effort to transform Uganda from where it was in 1986.
Leaders made the revelation during the Rukungiri district NRM conference which was organized by the minister of security and the Rujumbura county Member of Parliament Hon. Maj. Jim Muhwezi to assess the progress of NRM government programs and it held at hotel Riverside in Eastern division Rukungiri municipality.
Speaking before the gathering, Minister Jim Muhwezi revealed that NRM as the party has not yet come out to recommend anything about 2026 general elections but the party will not stop people from expressing their wish on who should contest.
The endorsement of President Museveni by the Rukungiri NRM leaders comes at a time when another section of people within the NRM has intensified efforts to front first son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba as their candidate in 2026.
Meanwhile Jim Muhwezi encouraged leaders to sensitize people on how to embrace new government program of Parish Development Model (PDM) since it is intending to help the 39% Ugandans who are still in subsistence farming to engage in commercial production.
Minister Muhwezi issued a stern warning to wetland encroachers to get out peacefully if Uganda is to have reliable rainfalls to facilitate human and industrial development and irrigation schemes to boost agriculture.
On the same function, Hon. Midius Natukunda Kaharata the Rukungiri district Woman Member of Parliament urged leaders and other stakeholders to sensitize their communities on the Parish Development Model especially on mindset change.
Rukungiri district NRM conference was attended by Deputy RDC Rukungiri Ahimbisibwe Wilberforce Ongom, LC5 Chairperson Geofrey Kyomukama, NRM delegates at Sub County and division levels among others.
